25.08.07: This was to be the longest day ever raced by some of the recycling.co.uk
team. "We have to bear in mind that this time last year some of the boys
were still only 18 and used to racing domestically in the junior ranks" said
team manager John Herety. So it was a nervous set of youngsters that lined
up for the start of their epic day.
Team leader Chris Newton and the still young but more experienced Rob
Partridge were both actually looking forward to the day. With no pressure on
either rider overall it was the opportunity for them to see if they could
slip into a break and enjoy the racing. Rob managed to do just that and was
in an early break that lasted for a long time. Rob managed to pick up some
points in the day's sprints too. This young man certainly proved himself
very capable. The break was doomed to failure later on in the race as the
top teams wanted another mass bunch sprint. The final climbs proved decisive
and the break was eventually absorbed. Chris and Rob finished the day in the
bunch whilst the youngsters found the going very tough towards the end.
Nevertheless, the boy's finished the day and went back to their hotel rooms
to relax. Tom Diggle told John Herety "thank god that day is over, what an
experience"! The British Premier Calendar series should hold no fear now for
the youngsters. Tom said "Tomorrow is only like doing the Tour of Pendle
distance so we'll be ok". This comment shows just how much their ability has
changed in less than 12 months under John's watchful eye.
At the end of the stage I spoke to John who said "that was an awesome day".
John a big fan of Ireland said, "The route and the scenery were magnificent,
it would be good to do a training camp in Ireland, it's gorgeous".
So, hopefully the boys will get a good nights rest and be ready for the
finale on Sunday.
