Newton Wins First Round of Premier Calendar Series
12.03.07: Recycling.co.uk's Chris Newton won the Bikeline 2-Day in North Wales yesterday after 3 tough stages. Chris powered to victory in the stage 1 time trial, a 1.6km sprint, beating his nearest opponent by just under 4 seconds to lead the race going into the afternoon's 56km road stage.
Chris finished the 2nd stage in 9th place in a group of 11 riders who finished 11 seconds behind winner Dean Downing (Rapha) and runner-up Ian Wilkinson (SIS/Trek), who took the overall from the recycling.co.uk rider.
The following day the field tackled a tough 138km stage with Chris finishing 4th behind Downing, who won his second stage, in a final group of 4. The recycling.co.uk rider finished the stage 25 seconds ahead of overnight leader Wilkinson and took overall victory by 15 seconds from Rob Sharman (KFS Special Vehicles), with Wilkinson in 3rd at 18 seconds.
Speaking to britishcycling.org.uk Chris said: "Not a bad start to the year. Last week I was recovering from a cold and this week went well in the time trial which was to be expected with the work I have been doing. Then yesterday, it was my fault Wilko got away but sometimes its better not to have the jersey in these type of races. Today, the lads for Recycling rode well and covered everything."
The race can been seen on cycling.tv with coverage also on British Eurosport on the 14th of March.
